Why Prague

Why Mozart belongs to Prague

  1. Late 1786: Figaro wins the city

The Marriage of Figaro had only a mixed success in Vienna, but when Prague produced it in late 1786 the press called it a masterpiece. Local music lovers and the orchestra paid for Mozart to come and hear it.

  2. January 1787: the Prague Symphony

Mozart reached Prague on 11 January 1787. A benefit concert on the 19th gave the first performance of his Symphony No. 38, now known as the Prague Symphony.

  3. 29 October 1787: Don Giovanni

The opera commissioned after that visit was first performed on 29 October 1787, with Mozart conducting, at the theatre now called the Estates Theatre.

  4. September 1791: La clemenza di Tito

Mozart returned for the coronation of Leopold II as king of Bohemia. La clemenza di Tito was first performed on 6 September 1791.

The evening, part by part

The evening, part by part

The night alternates music and food: a welcome, then three short Mozart segments, each paired with a course of a three-course dinner.

  1. Welcome

Doors open and a welcome drink

You reach the ballroom at the Grand Hotel Bohemia and are shown to the seat allocated for your category. A welcome drink opens the evening.

  2. Part I

    Don Giovanni

The first segment draws on Mozart's Don Giovanni: arias and duets for Leporello, Zerlina and the Don himself, with movements from Eine kleine Nachtmusik.

  3. Course 1

    The meal begins

The first course of the three-course dinner follows the first segment. Meat, vegetarian and children's menus are available.

  4. Part II

    The best of Mozart's operas

The second segment moves between operas: Figaro's Non più andrai, Cherubino's Voi che sapete and Don Giovanni's champagne aria, with a Divertimento in D major.

  5. Course 2

    The main course

The main course follows the second segment. Any drink beyond the welcome drink is bought on the night.

  6. Part III

    The Magic Flute

The last segment turns to Papageno and Pamina: Papageno's Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen, Pamina's Ach, ich fühl's and the duet for Papageno and Papagena.

  7. Course 3

    Dessert and farewell

Dessert closes the evening after the final segment.

The programme, cast and menu can change. Look to your confirmation for the start time on your date.

The room

The Boccaccio ballroom

A dance hall from 1927 in the basement of a hotel in Prague's Old Town, in a neo-baroque, Rococo-revival style, now used for parties, receptions and concerts.

Built with the hotel
The ballroom opened with the Grand Hôtel Steiner on 25 February 1927. It was planned as a separate world, with a staircase and an entrance hall of its own.
Marble, gilt and crystal
The hotel describes the room as a work of artificial marble, gold and crystal glass, with stucco decoration, gilt details and Czech crystal.
Where Prague danced
In the 1920s it hosted tea dances and evening soirées for Prague's high society. A box above the bar is still called the Presidential Box.
Restored in 1993
After decades of decline the hall was reconstructed in 1993. The artificial marble was repaired and the decoration restored and re-gilded.
